As excess body fat accumulates, a cascade of signaling molecules produces a chronic inflammatory state that makes it more difficult for the body to regulate blood sugar, maintain normal metabolism, and lose weight. As chronic inflammation continues to interfere with metabolic processes, weight loss can become more challenging.
What’s Happening Inside Your Body
We tend to think of inflammation as more of a nuisance, but it’s one of the body’s most important defense mechanisms. When your immune system detects an injury, infection, or other threat, it sends signals that activate a response to initiate healing. The “cascade” that happens is blood flow increases, immune cells move into the affected area, and signaling molecules called cytokines (proteins that help immune cells communicate) coordinate the rest of the process.
Acute inflammation is the short-term response that helps the body repair itself. The redness, warmth, swelling, and discomfort you experience when you cut your finger, for example, are signs that immune cells and inflammatory signals are active. Once the threat has been addressed, the inflammatory response resolves and the body returns to a balanced state.
A different pattern happens with chronic inflammation, and instead of turning on briefly and then shutting off, the immune system stays activated. Chronic inflammation is driven by ongoing internal signals that keep the immune system activated even when there is no immediate injury or infection to repair. It’s this ongoing release of cytokines and inflammatory response that can gradually place additional stress on normal cellular processes and how the different bodily systems interact with each other.1
Unlike acute inflammation, you don’t see chronic inflammation; it’s hidden within the body. It shows up over time, and people can experience the downstream effects as increased fatigue, changes in energy levels, difficulty managing blood sugar, worsening insulin resistance, or a greater tendency toward weight gain. Chronic inflammation can also contribute to the development of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease, and other metabolic disorders. It’s also implicated in the risk of developing certain cancers.1
Circling this back around to obesity, excess fat tissue can create an environment that promotes ongoing inflammation and metabolic dysfunction.
Excess Body Fat Promotes Chronic Inflammation
We now understand that adipose tissue (body fat) is much more active — it’s not just excess energy storage. Adipose (fat) tissue actually releases hormones and signaling molecules that communicate with the rest of the body.
When excess fat accumulates, especially visceral fat (fat stored around internal organs), fat cells begin to enlarge and send out signals that attract immune cells into the surrounding tissue. The immune system responds as if there is a problem that needs to be addressed, but unlike a cut or infection, the trigger does not go away. An onslaught of inflammatory markers is produced that contribute to a cycle of ongoing immune activation and metabolic disruption.
Inflammatory signals can interfere with more than just fat tissue; they can also affect the body’s response to insulin, making it harder to regulate blood sugar, as well as alter appetite and fullness cues, energy metabolism, liver function, and other cellular processes. This contributes to insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and other obesity-related health conditions. The resulting dysfunction can create an environment where the body becomes less responsive to weight loss efforts.
Treating obesity requires more than simply focusing on calories. While not required for everyone and not the only solution, medical weight management may become necessary to break this cycle of inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, and weight gain.
