The Checkered History of Weight Loss Medication in the United States

Getting started

Medications spilling out of blue bottle

Weight loss has been a perennial concern for many Americans, leading to a constant search for effective solutions. Over the years, various weight loss medications have been introduced, promising quick and effortless results. However, the history of weight loss medication in the United States is checkered, marred by controversies, safety concerns, and disappointing outcomes.

One of the most notorious examples of weight loss medication gone wrong is the case of Phen-Phen. In the 1990s, the combination of two drugs, fenfluramine and phentermine, gained popularity as a frankly very effective weight loss solution. This drug combo was believed to suppress appetite and increase metabolism, leading to significant weight loss. However, it was later discovered that using Phen-Phen was associated with serious heart and lung complications, including heart valve damage and pulmonary hypertension. The drug was eventually withdrawn from the market, leaving some patients dead and many users with long-term health issues.

The Phen-Phen debacle highlighted the need for stricter regulations and thorough testing of weight loss medications. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented more rigorous approval processes to ensure the safety and efficacy of weight loss drugs. However, despite these measures, the history of weight loss medication remains one of great hope, followed mostly by failure.

In recent years, the market has been flooded with over-the-counter weight loss supplements, often marketed as natural or herbal alternatives to prescription medications. These supplements claim to aid weight loss by boosting metabolism, suppressing appetite, or blocking fat absorption. However, many of these products lack scientific evidence to support their claims and are not subject to the same rigorous testing as prescription medications. Remember, the FDA does not regulate supplements. In fact, some products were banned after deaths were reported!

The lack of regulation and oversight has led to numerous weight loss supplements being found to contain harmful substances or undisclosed pharmaceutical ingredients. For example, the FDA has identified hidden ingredients in several weight loss supplements, such as sibutramine (a controlled substance). These undisclosed ingredients can pose serious health risks, including increased blood pressure, heart palpitations, and stroke.

Furthermore, even when the FDA approves weight loss medications, their effectiveness often falls short of expectations. Many prescription weight loss drugs have limited success rates and have potential side effects. For instance, orlistat, a medication that inhibits fat absorption, can cause gastrointestinal issues, such as oily stools and increased bowel movements. Other drugs, such as lorcaserin, have been associated with potential risks, including increased cancer risk.

Today’s Drugs

Today, the world has been consumed by drugs known as semaglutides. These GLP-1 agonists have shown excellent weight loss results. Wegovy, for example, has been approved for use in obese patients for the purposes of weight loss. Other semaglutides, like Ozempic, that are approved for diabetes, are being (most often legally) prescribed off-label for people to lose weight. While both were approved through the usual FDA processes, widespread adoption often uncovers side effects that may not have readily been apparent during the trials. We are currently seeing an uptick in side effects that are being investigated by European and US authorities alike.

The checkered history of weight loss medication in the United States highlights the complexity of addressing obesity and finding safe and effective solutions. While weight loss medications can be valuable for some individuals, they should always be used under a healthcare professional’s guidance and with lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Consumers must be cautious when considering weight loss medications or supplements. They should consult with their healthcare providers to understand these products’ potential risks and benefits. Additionally, it is important to be skeptical of exaggerated claims and to seek evidence-based information before embarking on any weight loss journey.
