For those who suffer from pelvic floor dysfunction- whether it be fecal incontinence or chronic constipation, we know that it can quickly impact your quality of life. We are proud to offer our patients here at MASJax access to anal manometry and rectal sensation testing, with the Solar Compact from Laborie.
Anorectal manometry is a test that we perform with a small catheter device in order to evaluate patients for symptoms such as constipation and fecal incontinence. We will often use this test when we suspect that surgery/disease may have caused injury to muscles or nerves within the anus – allowing us to determine the more exact cause of the dysfunction. The test may also be used when diabetes may have caused impaired sensation in the rectum.
A small catheter is inserted into the anus, which is then used to test your pelvic floor function. It helps to provide deeper insights into how your pelvic muscles are functioning- things like sphincter contraction and tone, ability to defecate and squeeze, along with maintaining adequate strength when coughing or squeezing. Using this information, we are then able to recommend different treatment options tailored to your individual needs, such as pelvic floor physical therapy, biofeedback, or even surgical approaches when necessary. This simple and quick test will help you begin your journey to improved quality of life.
